Monoblock units.
Air Conditioners from 6000 Btu’s up to 12000Btu’s tend
to be monoblocks.
A monoblock is the most simple air conditioning solution. Simply
plug the unit in to a normal 13amp socket, hang the flexible exhaust
hose ( similar to that of a tumble dryer ) out of a window or vent
it through a wall or door left slightly ajar and switch on. The
hose is used to carry warm air from the room to the outside.
Split Units
These tend to be Air Conditioners with a cooling output greater
than 12000Btu’s. As the name suggests, these air conditioners
are ‘split’ into two pieces. The internal unit looks
much the same as a monoblock unit, however it is connected ( via
flexible refrigerant lines ) to a ‘condensing’ unit
which needs to be placed outside. When choosing a split unit it
is wise to choose one which has ‘tool free’ connectors.
This will allow the user to connect and disconnect the units from
one another without the need for a refrigeration engineer and can
be handy when feeding the refrigerant lines through a wall or window
before connecting to the condenser unit. Beware however, as some
split units do not allow the inside and outside units to be disconnected
at all.
